He pulls out a knife, and removes his hand from Dean's mouth. Cas and Dean don't talk as Cas let's him know he's not gonna hurt him. Dean watches as Cas uses the knife to cut into his own arm and starts to paint the angel banishment sigil. Zachariah appears, and Cas banishes him before he can stop him. Cas tells Dean that Zachariah won't be gone long, so they have to find Sam quick. Dean asks if he knows, but Cas just knows someone who does, and they have to stop him from killing Lilith.

Dean says that Lilith is gonna break the final seal, but Cas tells him that killing Lilith is the final seal. As Zachariah tortures Sam and Dean, Cas suddenly appears and kills one of the angels. He fights off the other angel and scares Zachariah into fixing Sam and Dean. Zachariah leaves, and Sam and Dean get up from the ground.

Cas tells them that they need to be more careful, Dean agrees, given that the angels are bigger dicks than he thought. Cas says he doesn't mean the angels, but Lucifer. He looks between Sam and Dean and touches their chests, carving enochian sigils to hide them from the angels. Sam asks Cas if he was really dead, and Cas confirms so. Dean asks how he got back but doesn't give an answer.

He just looks to Dean before disappearing. He tells them where they are, and Cas comes to the hospital. Dean asks since when he's needed a cell phone. Cas reminds him that they're hidden from all angels, including him, when Bobby interrupts them.

After telling Bobby he can't heal him, Cas turns to Dean and tells him that the needs to talk quickly. He tells Dean that his plan to kill Lucifer can't be done, and Dean sarcastically thanks him for support. Sam watches Dean and Cas talk. Cas says that there is still someone strong enough to take on Lucifer, and Sam asks who. Cas tells him that he's going to find god, surprising both Sam and Dean.

Dean tells him that if God is real, then he's either dead or doesn't care about them. Cas tells him to stop, and that with god they can defeat Lucifer. Dean calls it a pipe dream, but Cas tells him that he rebelled against heaven for him, So Dean can keep his opinions to himself. Bobby interrupts saying that Cas didn't just come to be angry at them. Cas reveals that he came for an amulet that can find god. He looks to Dean then, down at his amulet, indicating that it's the amulet.

Cas asks to borrow it, but Dean says no. Cas asks again, and Dean takes a moment before taking it off. As he's about to hand it over he tells Cas not to lose it, Cas takes it and tells him he'll be in touch before disappearing. Dean is in his motel room, when Cas suddenly appears behind him.

He looks up and sees Cas in the mirror, startling him. He tells Cas not to do that, but Cas just responds with a hello. Dean turns to face him, and is very close to him.

Dean reminds him that they've talked about personal space, and Cas apologizes as he steps back. Dean asks how Cas knew where he was, and Cas tells him that Bobby told him. He asks where Sam is, and Dean says that they're separated right now. He asks if Cas found god, and if he can have his necklace back.

Cas says no, which is why he's here, since he needs Dean's help. Dean says he's not interested in hunting god, but Cas says that he's trying to find the archangel that killed him, Raphael. He has information, and Dean asks if he thinks that Raphael will just hand over god's address.

Cas thinks it will work, since they'll capture and interogate him. Dean asks if he's serious, and Cas says that he is. Dean asks for one good reason to it, and Cas says that being Michael's vessel, no angel will harm him.

Dean is offended, and Cas tells him that Dean is the only one who will help him. Dean says fine, and asks where Raphael is. Cas says Maine, and is about to transport them, but Dean stops him and decides that they're driving. The two arrive in Maine, Dean asking why they're at a police station. Cas tells him that a Sheriff was the one to see Raphael.

Dean asks what the plan is, and Cas tells him that they're going to tell him the truth. Dean says that's a bad idea, pulls out a fake FBI badge, and places it in Cas' coat. Cas asks why, and Dean tells him that they're humans and when they want something they lie.

They go inside the police station and meet with the sheriff as "FBI". They're able to get the location and head down to St. Pete's hospital where they find Raphael's vessel, completely broken. Dean asks if that's what will happen after he is possessed by Michael, but Cas tells him it'll be much worse. Dean is in an abandoned house as Cas returns. He asks where he was, and Cas tells him he was in Jerusalem for holy oil that can be used to trap Raphael.

Dean asks if they have a chance of surviving a confrontation with Raphael, and Cas tells him that Dean does, but not him. Dean asks what Cas plans to do with his last night on earth, but Cas doesn't have any.

Dean suggests booze or women and asks if Cas has been with anyone. Cas awkwardly tells him that he's never had the occasion. Dean then decides that Cas isn't going to "Die a virgin on my watch.

Dean takes an extremely nervous Cas to a brothel. He tells him to relax, but Cas just calls the place a den of inequity, and that they shouldn't be there. Dean says that rebelling against heaven has inequity as one of the perks. A girl walks over and Dean tells him it's showtime. She starts to pull Cas away, but Dean stops them for a second.

He gives Cas some cash and advice, which Cas takes as he follows her. Dean starts having drinks with another girl, when he hears a scream. He follows it and finds Chastity yelling at Cas. As she stomps away he asks what Cas did. Cas says that he doesn't know, all he did was tell her that her dad didn't run off because of her.

Dean laughs and tells him that the whole industry runs on absent fathers, just as two bouncers show up. Dean tells him it's time to go and the two leave quickly. Once outside, Dean bends over laughing, and Cas asks what's so funny. They walks to the car, and Dean tells Cas that "it's been a long time since he laughed so hard". The next day, Cas and Dean go back to the hospital to perform the ritual.

Dean asks how it works, and Cas tells him that there's a line between an and angel and their vessel. Dean watches as Cas calls the line, and when he's finished Dean asks how long it will take for a response. Cas just tells him to be ready and lights the holy fire around the vessel. When they spend the whole day waiting and it doesn't work, they go back to the house where Raphael appears.

Raphael tells Cas that it's a mercy that he doesn't kill him, but Dean calls him out and says that he's probably just afraid that Cas will come back to life again and kill Raphael.

Raphael tells Dean that he know who, and now, he is. Cas says that he won't kill Dean, which Raphael says is true, but he will take him to Michael.

Dean reveals that they knew he was coming and light the holy fire ring that he steps into. Cas asks him where god is, but Raphael just says that he's dead. Cas accuses Raphael of lying, but Raphael believes it's true, given the state of the world. Dean argues with Raphael over the state of the world when he causes the windows to blow out.

Cas asks who brought him back if god is dead, and Raphael suggests Lucifer. Cas tells Dean they're leaving, but Raphael quickly says that he will find him. Cas tells him that may happen "but today, you're my little bitch. As the two drive away, Dean asks Cas if he's okay but he doesn't answer.

He tells Cas that he still thinks his crusade his nuts but he does know about missing dads. Cas asks what he means, and Dean explains that there were times where he was looking for John even when it seemed he was dead, but he still believed he was alive. He asks Cas what he believes, and Cas says he still believes he's out there. Dean tells him to go find God, and Cas asks what he'll do. Dean doesn't know, just that he's good right now.

Cas asks if that's even without Sam, and Dean says especially that. He's spent so much time worrying about him that he had more fun with Cas in that day than he had with Sam in years. Cas agrees as Dean hangs, up and waits. Just as Zachariah is about to punish Dean, Cas whisks him away. Dean tells him that it was perfect timing, and Cas says it's because they had an appointment. Dean places his hand on Cas' shoulder and tells him to never change. Cas asks how Zachariah found him, and just tells him they need to stay away from religious zhelots.

He pulls out his phone, and Cas asks what he's doing. Dean tells him something he should have done first, and calls Sam. Dean and Sam arrive back at their hotel room where they find Cas. Cas tells them that they're lucky they found Jesse. Dean asks what they do with him, and Cas tells them to kill him, shocking Dean and Sam. Cas reveals that Jesse is actually the anti-christ.

Dean asks what Jesse is doing in Nebraska, and Cas tells him that the demons lost him, since his power hides him from Demons and Angels. Dean assumes that solves the problem, but Cas tells him that Lucifer causes the kids powers to grow stronger and will draw the demons to him. Sam tells Cas that they're not going to kill a child. Dean steps in and tells Cas that they won't kill him, but they can't leave him either so they'll take him to Bobby's and figure it out from there.

Cas tells him that this is what Jesse is like when he's happy, it'll be so much worse if it's angry, and starts pointing out the holes in their plan and leaves. Sam and Dean get to Jesse's. Dean asks Jesse if there was a man in a trench coat there, and Jesse points to Cas he made into a doll. Sam and Dean find Jesse's room empty, and Cas comes up and tells him that he's gone and turned everyone back to normal.

Dean asks how they'll find him, but Cas says that they can't, unless he wants to be. Cas works on a spell as he tells Sam and Dean about Anna. Dean can't believe it, but Cas says that it's true. Dean compares Anna to Glenn Close, and Cas asks who that is. Sam asks if Anna's plan will stop Lucifer, but, after a look from Dean, Cas assures him that it wouldn't.

Dean asks why they're trying to find Anna, and he explains that Anna won't stop till Sam is dead, so they need to kill her first. He performs the spell and finds out that she's in Cas says that she's going to kill John and Mary, since she can't get to Sam because of him.

Dean tells him to take them back, but Cas says no. Dean insists since it's their parents, but Cas says that'd it's now more difficult since he's cut off from heaven. Cas says that the trip will weaken him, but Dean still insists and Cas gives in. They pack and go back to Sam and Dean are getting ready to leave in the motel room, when Cas appears.

He starts to fall and Sam catches him, Dean grabbing his other side. Dean is amazed that he made it, as is Cas. Cas looks from Dean to Sam. He then passes out, and the two drag him to the bed. As the two pour themselves a drink, Dean says that they're it. Sam asks what he means.

Dean says that they're Team Free Will, and Sam says it's not funny. Dean agrees. The three head to a restaurant, and Dean asks how Cas knows that Cupid frequently goes to places like it. Sam and Dean are confused by Cas wanting a burger. Cas then says that the cherub is there, and tells them to meet him in the back.

Sam and Dean head back, Cas has the cupid tethered and says the incantation to manifest him. Dean asks where he is when the cupid comes up from behind and hugs him. The cherub let's go of Dean and hugs Cas. Dean asks if this is cupid, and Cas confirms it. The cupid then notices Sam and hugs him. Dean asks if they're in a fight, but Cas explains that it's a cupid's handshake.

Dean says that he doesn't like it, and Cas tells him that no one does. Cas and Dean start to interrogate the angel on why his targets are murdering each other, and the cupid becomes upset. Sam asks if someone should talk to him, and Dean tells Cas to give him hell. The cupid reveals that he had nothing to do with the murders.

Cas tells Sam ad Deann that the cupid is telling the truth. Sam and Dean open a brief case from the demon, and a flash of white light appears.

Cas then appears and tells them that it's a human soul, and tell them that the town is in Famine. Dean says that it explains the cupid victims and asks how that effects Cas.

Cas explains that his vessel is affecting him and that Famine needs to devour the souls of his victims. Dean asks how they stop it, and Cas asks how they stopped War. Dean explains the ring that war had, and asks if Famine has one. Cas says that he does, and they decide to track him down. Cas gets distracted by the burger, and Dean asks if he's tried to stop.

Cas says that he can stop anytime he wants. Dean tells Sam it's time to go, but Sam says that he can't since Famine is making him crave Demon blood. Dean tells Cas to get Sam out of there, but Cas just tells him that he's already infected.

Sam tells him to go cut off the ring, but to lock him up first. Dean locks him in a bathroom, and walks out with Cas. Cas and Dean head down to the clinic, and find out that the head examiner is dead. Cas says it was Famine and places his hand on the body.

He tells Dean that Famine hasn't taken his soul. They decide to wait for the demon to collect the soul so they can follow them. Outside the Clinic, Cas returns to Dean's car with a bag of burgers.

Cas says they make him very happy, and Dean asks how many he's had. Cas guesses it's in the low hundreds, making Dean whistle. Cas wonders why Dean isn't starting to fall to hunger, and Dean figures he just gets what he wants when he wants it anyway, and Cas asks if that means he's well adjusted, but Dean thinks it's that he's well fed.

Cas then see's the demon, and the two follow. They arrive at a diner where Famine is, and Dean asks if he wants to go over the plan again. Cas quickly goes over it, which Dean sarcastically called foolproof, but Cas is gone when he looks back. Less than 30 seconds later, he goes into the diner.

He see's Cas scarfing down burger meat, but is caught by demons. Later, Sam is locked in the demon proof bunker yelling as Dean drinks. Cas assures him that it's not really Sam in there, which Dean knows.

Cas says Sam will be fine when the demon blood is out of his system, but Dean just says that he needs some air and goes outside. They find Joshua and find out that God knows about Earth's problems and simply doesn't care. This hurts Castiel, who renounces his faith in God and disappears. Following that, in 99 Problems, Castiel arrives on the scene drunk, short tempered, and bitter. He and Dean later have a heart-to-heart about poor fathers.

They try to change his attitude before Cass goes to retrieve the resurrected Adam Milligan Sam and Dean's half-brother who is suspected as a replacement vessel for Michael. With this added problem, they lock Dean in the panic room of Bobby's basement to stop him from leaving. The feelings of betrayal come to a head when Dean escapes Bobby's home by banishing Castiel and attempts to contact the angels.

Castiel appears and beats Dean within an inch of his life, venting his frustration. He later goes on a suicide mission, stating that he would rather die than watch Dean crumble and fail.

Castiel later returns in Two Minutes to Midnight and apologizes to Dean for not having more faith in him. Dean forgives him, and they reconcile. However, Castiel admits that, technically, he is human, having depleted his "batteries" during his suicide mission. Despite this, Castiel still comes to Dean and Sam's rescue and cuts off Pestilence's finger. In Swan Song, Castiel is shockingly human, displaying more emotion than ever.

He appears during the fight between Michael and Lucifer, distracting them by throwing a molotov cocktail of holy fire at Michael. This allows Dean to try and get through to Sam, though it ends with an offended Lucifer causing Castiel to explode. Castiel comes when Dean calls him in The Third Man.

He mentions in this episode that he has more profound bond with Dean than Sam. Castiel helps Dean figure out it is the Staff of Moses doing the killing and the trail leads to a rogue angel and friend Balthazar. Castiel also mentions that he needs the stolen weapons of Heaven back due to a civil war in heaven against the archangel Raphael.

Dean calls Castiel again when he's worried about Sam, but Castiel refused to answer unless it was connected to the fight he and Dean had which angered Dean. When Castiel does show up, he dismisses Dean's theory that Lucifer still inside Sam.

Castiel promises Dean to make some inquiries after telling him that he, Castiel, doesn't answer Dean's prayers when they're connected to Sam because he doesn't know how to help. Dean later calls Castiel to check on what's wrong with Sam Family Matters. Castiel reaches into Sam, and discovers that he doesn't have a soul, and explains that whoever brought Sam back left Sam's soul behind in the cage with Michael and Lucifer. When Dean questions whether soulless Sam is even still "Sam", Castiel admits that that's a good question.

In Caged Heat, Castiel exhibits more human urges, inadvertently watching porn, and later passionately kissing Meg, both to Dean's discomfort.

Castiel warns Dean that bringing Sam's soul back could permanently damage the younger Winchester psychologically, but Dean remains firm on retrieving the soul. Castiel is banished with a sigil when they lay siege to Crowley's warehouse, but later returns with Crowley's bones, which he promptly incinerates when Crowley admits he can't retrieve Sam's soul from the cage.

Later, when Castiel admits to Dean that he is on the losing side of the civil war in Heaven, Dean assures his friend that if he needs help, all he has to do is ask. When Sam gets his soul back, Dean calls Castiel to check on him. When Dean questions Castiel on whether or not Sam will wake up, Castiel is curt with him, and berates Dean for not listening to him.

When Dean reacts defensively, Castiel angrily tells him that Sam's soul felt "as if it was skinned alive", and tells Dean that if he wanted to kill his brother, he should have done it outright, making his stance on the matter clear. When Castiel and Balthazar go back in time to stop the Titanic from sinking, Atropos—one of the three Fates—forces Castiel to capitulate and fix the timeline by threatening the Winchesters. He doesn't tell Dean or Sam the real reason for going back in time; while he really sent Balthazar so that they would have more souls for the war, he allows them to believe that Balthazar simply didn't like the movie, or Celine Dion.
