What was beowulfs weakness
Before that happens however, while talking with Wiglaf, Beowulf gives us one more instance of his pride. Beowulf was boasting that since Grendel did not use mail and a weapon, that he would not either. Nor will I. If Beowulf were to underestimate Grendel then he, too would be killed like all the others who stood against his savage acts, Beowulf knows nothing of his opponent and not the slightest clue of just how blood-curling he could actually be. Beowulf was simply doing all of this for fame, and even proclaims that he does not want any of the fame he is going to get, be lessened by using his sword.
Instead, he had his people. The fight with the dragon is clear evidence for this. Beowulf chose to go alone to face the dragon, so as not to put the rest of his people in danger. This definitely shows that he has become more human than monster. Although there was a huge risk of Beowulf becoming a monster through his strength, boastfulness, and forgetfulness of his humanity, in the end he proved he could be a human. Beowulf presents the same qualities as a hero in our society today.
When Beowulf is about to fight the Dragon he tells his men he will fight it alone, in the society today the heroes are always working together no one is ever alone. I find this action of Beowulf unheroic and it costs him his life in the end. I believe that Beowulf had the thought in his mind that he was invincible and that no one could match up with him which ended up costing him his life.
Any good king would have known that it would have been a good idea to bring many men to fight a dragon but due in part to his lack of experience, Beowulf only brought a few men to fight the dragon.
The other reason Beowulf was not a great king and he did not do well is because he was still too hungry for glory. Another part of being a good king is letting the warriors do the fighting and battling and paying them later. Beowulf never stopped seeing himself as a warrior even when he started being king and his courage never ceased, this ultimately led to his demise.
Gawaine gained courage because the Headmaster told him that if he says the magic word no dragon could harm him and once he realized that the word was worthless he lost confidence. Beowulf was distinguished among his people, the Geats, for his bravery. As a young man Beowulf fought in many battles and as a result, showed his great character to others. Beowulf had many characteristics which helped him to succeed in battle. As a young man, Beowulf was known as the strongest man alive.
His strength allowed him to dominate in battle. If it were not for his pure strength, he would not have been able to defeat Grendel, for weapons would not work.
By fighting Grendel without weapons, he opened himself up to greater glorification. While his arrogance allowed Beowulf to be sure of himself in battle, some of his peers found it to be a character flaw. Beowulf also had a strong spirit of adventure.
His spirit of adventure was part of the reason that Beowulf went to fight Grendel. Beowulf used his glory in previous battles to justify himself when coming to help Hrothgar.
In addition, his self-assurance, and known bravery probably guided his decision. While at his young age, Beowulf used his strength for glory and recognition.
Under the right circumstances, each of us can be a hero and in some other circumstances behave like a. The final evil soul that Beowulf had to conquer; but in fact died from the battle; was the dragon.
The dragon symbolizes evil and the devil in many cultures. The dragon is driven by greed and immaturity. Heroes are often portrayed as being perfect and not similar to humans.
This is not actually the case in which every hero has some kind of weakness or flaw. This is the reason that one feels connected to heros. This applies to Beowulf because although he saves the Danes from Grendel, he still has imperfections. One thing that Beowulf does to make himself a hero is he uses his weaknesses as an advantage.
Beowulf is not the largest man and does not have great eyesight, but he uses cunning to defeat even the most difficult enemy.
Furthermore, Beowulf specifically applies to the theme of how even heroes are not perfect. Nye illustrates that a hero can use his weaknesses as advantages. Fitela is most definitely not the most fierce warrior but him and Sigemund still manages to defeat the dragon. Fitela distracted the Dragon which was a very important element in conquering the dragon.
Beowulf using a witty trick that gets the Firedrake killed. Furthermore, young Beowulf would have tried to kill the Firedrake using just muscle, but instead he used cunning, which was. Show More.
